Why of all liberty loving places in the world do we find that our U.S. Supreme Court after 30 years has finally ruled that a certain procedure of aborting a fetus is unconstitutional?
Yes, I'm talking about the "partial birth abortion" ban. Did you know that the very term was invented by a pro-life group (I can't remember which one...Right to Life or something). The medical term that doctors use is "intact dilation and extraction". Far too technical a term to use in a political debate I guess.
The simple fact is that doctors do not call "intact dilation and extraction" "partial birth abortion". So why would a lobby group change the terminology and affect the political discourse?
For one; this type of abortion is so rare that such a decision made by the Supreme Court is seemingly frivolous. Or is it?
What causes such lobby groups to petition our government? Religion. How do I come to this conclusion? Well, go to any number of anti-abortion websites and you will definitely find some reference to "god".
Now about the details of this ruling. The Supreme Court ruled that the procedure of "partial birth abortion" is UNCONSTITUTIONAL. Even though this ruling leaves out any consideration for the health of the mother.
So, if a pregnant woman sees her doctor in her 3rd trimester and finds that if she continues with her pregnancy she may be endangering her life...guess what? If her and her doctor decide that, in order to prevent any complications...LIKE DYING...they decide to abort the fetus.
After an investigation by the authorities they are arrested, detained and brought before a judge. Their actions (according to the U.S. Supreme Court) are considered illegal. Now, what kind of punishment should be meted out? According to most "pro-life" organizations they have taken a human life. In some states it could be considered premeditated murder and therefore worthy of the death penalty. What happened to the "sanctity" of life agenda there?
Yeah, I know: No court would see fit to rule in favor of the death penalty in such a case. At least not right now.
So what is going on in this country? Should we the people be afraid? Or should we be god fearing instead? According to the folks who pull the strings that govern our lives this seems to be the case. A select few people see fit to "inform" the public about policy issues containing a religious slant (and I'm not referring just to this particular abortion issue).
This is what drives our political process? What comes next? What is the next political agenda? Instituting the bible as educational text in our public schools? Sounds retarded but I personally know people who think it should be...and they are registered voters.
Apparently our civil liberties have been put on the political back-burner in regards to "national security" with the Patriot Act. This has created an easy-in for political lobbyists to affect other issues regarding our liberties.
Across the "pond" we see European society embracing secularism. I think for the simple fact that they have seen enough of what detriment religion has caused throughout the ages.
Is this a signal? Is it time to get the hell out of Dodge? No, we have seen migrations from "the hoods" of our urban areas by law-abiding citizens. This is analogous to fleeing political scrutiny and/or persecution. If secular citizens flee this country then we leave it to the fundamentalists to further shape it. Until the day that I am hunted down and targeted for my FREE SPEECH then and only then I will seek refuge where I am welcomed. Can you imagine being a refugee from the U.S.? Insanity I know. Crazy, yet is this so far out? I really fear that, later on down the road, free-thinkers may be considered second-class citizens. George H. W. Bush said so. That atheists should not be considered rightful citizens of this country. Well. Who is the current president of the U.S.? His son. The "messiah", I guess.
The really scary thing is that xtians look up to Bush to carry out an agenda that furthers their cause. I'm not entirely sure of that. I personally think it's about "capital"...money. Power...can't separate all that.
Money, power and policy. Somehow ideology seems to squeak in there. For this simple reason: If you have somebody in public office, it is inevitable that they will bring with them a particular ideological viewpoint however pertinent it may pertain to the base that got them there in the first place.
Any hoo...
I've rambled enough. Back to the premise of this post title...
Are xtian fundamentalists making a last ditch effort to throw off secularism or is this a real danger to you, me and the rest of society? The rest of our civil liberties?
