Because I look around and and can't help but recognize the fact that religious ideology has molded and infused every aspect of our lives. Be we believers or nonbelievers.
I have no issue with death and an afterlife. In the main it's about being rebellious I guess. Bucking the system that has brought greater woe to the world that believers seem to disbelieve.
I recognize that religion is about controlling people and how they live their lives. I recognize that religion is indeed a tool. Not just of the clergy, but of the "elite" as well. We see this in W.
I am atheist for political reasons, not spiritual reasons. Because any argument pertaining to the existence or non-existence of a god is utterly pointless. Any argument or debate about the existence of an afterlife is moot. For this very simple fact: people are going to believe what they want to believe until they themselves change their mind. Until then I am more than happy to debate and argue (when in the end I more than likely will not have changed their mind. At least I may have planted a seed).
I am atheist because I am a strict secularist. Very strict secularist. I believe that our politicians should be barred from speaking about god in their political speeches. I think it should be an impeachable offense. That's how strict I am. No god on our money (though god probably belongs there any way). No god in our public schools. No god in our national anthem. No ten commandments anywhere on public property.
Religion needs to stay personal and private. Not into the public sphere.

Another reason why I'm an atheist
