I know a few Xians. Their view is that the world is going to hell in a hand-basket more or less. They see the violence on TV, in video games, etc. They see the violence in the news, in the schools, etc.
What seems to come up time and again is that damn Madalyn Murray O'Hair! She took prayer out of school!!!
And that damn ACLU! UH!!!
Well, let's take a step back. If religion were sanctioned and indeed endorsed by the state, would we be better off?
Whether people like it or not, there are going to be other people who do not particularly identify with someone else's ideological stance. Even among specific Xian denominations.
If it were up to fundamentalist Xians then public schooling (in its current state) would be abolished and dismantled. To be replaced with bible-thumping school-marms of a particular meme. If you didn't agree with the "new" school system, I guess you would have to send your kid to a private secular school or do home schooling.
With nationalized religious education comes a little bit of outcry. Namely from those who don't agree with it. Like me and maybe you.
But hey! It's what everybody wants, right? The tables have turned. And we the secularists seem to be on the outs.
I would wager that most Xians in this country [US] feel that secularists are perverting the "true" meaning of the first amendment. That somewhere, somehow the constitution was founded on Xian values. Even if that WERE true, what gives them the gall to trump everybody else's civil liberties with their own, based on a religious ideology?
If I had children, in the eyes of Xians my children would be educated in the word of a god first and foremost. Everything else is secondary.
Anybody not conforming to this edict would be forced to home school or whatever...private schooling.
Nationalized religious education? Anybody ever here of the madras' in some Muslim countries?
I rest my case on that point.
Ultimately, It's really about taking away peoples rights and religious freedoms.
Secularism separates church and state. Some people may have qualms about that, but it provides the best platform to take a clear view of your fellow man/woman. People of differing faiths (and non-believers) have existed in societies for all of known history. That will not be ended by desecularization.
Differing cultures and differing religions and differing ideologies know no national boundaries. We must live with it.
And we must embrace it. The best bet is complete secularization.
Welcome your fellow human being for who they are.
