There's so much heated debate going on these days about atheist ideology concerning, especially, the existence of a god. What gets people so fired up about it? Including myself at times, though I no longer wish to participate in such speculation.
My particular quarrel is this: Why do we even have such debates? Simple; somebody is or thinks the other "side" is wrong.
Additionally, some people of faith view atheists as worm-dirt and/or have this attitude of "You'll see. When you're in hell" and others simply feel sorry for you and offer to pray for your soul.
I'll now continue within the Christian context because I don't know any Muslims, Hindus, Buddhists or any other people of faith.
So, I'll refer to the most benign example of "praying for your soul". Obviously you've told the person you don't believe in a god. What's so hard to understand that you feel it is completely unnecessary and banal for somebody to pray for you. Either the believer is sincerely concerned for your salvation and then proceeds to ask god to intervene, I suppose, to "show you the light", or the person believes your going to hell and still wants to pray for your soul. It's clearly a self-serving gesture whether one likes to believe it or not, they want to convert you so they are good in the eyes of the lord. By all appearances conversion is a means to further ensure ones way into the pearly gates. After all that is what the person is praying to the lord for, right? That you come around and "see the light"; be born again.
All in all, I get a sense that Christians see atheism as the wrong way to be (for anybody). It's immoral to question god or his existence. It essentially boils down to the disdainful notion that there are no atheists in foxholes. This notion implies that atheists are wrong and that no matter what, god is going to bitch slap the atheist in the end. That all in good time god will make himself known. And once he does you will either be dead and in hell or a convert.
Sure, there are Christians out there who are silent on this subject and even refrain from discussing the precepts of atheism, but in the depths of their beliefs they too feel the same way that most outspoken Christians feel. I call these Christians enablers. They are the "followers"; the sheep.
So what's wrong with being an atheist? Come on. It's obvious there is something "wrong" with being an atheist. It's our society.
I'm of the position that I don't want Christians to be atheists. What I do want is Christians to accept atheists and particularly secularists to be accepted as viable participants in society. I don't want to destroy religious belief (only because it would be impossible). To each their own. I want to be accepted as a contribution to society. As it stands there seems to be no room for atheism in America. Because it's wrong.

What's wrong with being an atheist?
