I've known about atheists in the military. What atheist blogger hasn't followed the story of Pat Tillman? Or the Military Religious Freedom Foundation?
Well it's one thing to blog about it, it's another to actually read a blog written first hand from an atheist serving our country in the military. To me this gives a whole new spin on "Support Our Troops". Not that I never did. They are doing their duty. And to protect and uphold the constitution of this country.
I wouldn't want to be an atheist in the military. I couldn't actually, my ideological mind-set is much to hardened, you see; I'm a pacifist. Not some hippie free-love kind of pacifist. I just don't believe that an offensive type military structure, and the waging of war (unjust or otherwise) is conducive to...well: peace in the world. Granted I know that wars are declared by politicians and not (in most cases) by the military itself (the personnel). I also believe that the military industrial machine is not really military in origin. It's corporations like Lockheed-Martin (et. al.) that drive the political process by which the military can actually function. It's all about money...war that is.
[EDIT]
I just google newsed "military atheist" and the first on the list was this:
- Military, Officials Honor Soldiers' '911'
TEMPLE TERRACE Military chaplains are the most valuable players on their teams, says Maj. Gen. Michael Diamond of the U.S. Central Command.
...
"There is no such thing as an atheist in a foxhole," said Danner, who then presented Cobban with a ball cap containing the Purple Heart insignia. "Keep it in your car in case you find your foot a little bit heavy. You can pull out your hat if you get pulled over because a lot of policemen are ex-military people."
