Evolution teaching bill riles professors
Professors from around Iowa are rallying against a piece of state legislation that supports alternative teaching of evolution.
More than 220 people, including 56 University of Iowa professors, have signed an Iowa faculty petition against House File 183 — the Evolution Academic Freedom Act, introduced this session by Rep. Rod Roberts, R-Carroll.
The bill maintains that teaching religious theories of evolution falls under academic freedom. It would allow teachers at all education levels to teach religious theories as science, and it would forbid teachers from discounting nonscience-based answers from students on papers and tests.
"The premise of the petition is that this is ridiculous. Let's stop it here," said John Logsdon, a U of I associate professor of evolutionary molecular genetics.
