There's been fairly recent discussion on the position of so-called "militant atheists" in the media and in atheist circles as well. In light of current events such as occurred in Arizona with the assassination attempt on Congressman Giffords life and subsequent, unfortunate deaths of guests and by-standers and Giffords political event, I can understand the urgency to address where exactly atheists stand in the political discourse.
